Photographer's Note
I liked the contrast of the lavish dress of Queen Elizabeth I and the view of the modern girl.
The painting shows so called Armada portrait that is displayed in the Queen's House in Greenwich.
"The portrait is a carefully calculated piece of propaganda, filled with symbolism and hidden meaning.
Behind Elizabeth are two seascapes. On the left, the English fleet prepare for battle in calm waters. On the right, the Spanish Armada are battered by English storms, their fleet in total disarray. In this portrait, Elizabeth turns her back on the Spanish struggle, and faces towards the calm sea.
Elizabeth痴 clothing is incredibly lavish, indicating her immense wealth and fine taste. The black and white of Elizabeth痴 dress represented eternal virginity.
The pearls which drip from her clothing also suggest purity and chastity: there is no denying that this is The Virgin Queen.Elizabeth痴 skirt and sleeves are embroidered gold with numerous suns, and her extraordinary ruff fills a circular shape, emulating rays of sunshine emerging from a sun which is, in this case, the face of Elizabeth I, a source of warmth and benevolence. The objects which surround her convey important messages, too. In the bottom right is a mermaid, a creature believed to tempt sailors to perilous waters, perhaps representing Elizabeth痴 power over the Spanish sailors. The globe on which Elizabeth痴 right hand rests indicates England痴 dominion of the seas and expansion into the New World. Elizabeth痴 finger even points towards the first English colony in the Americas, on Roanoke Island, which had been established three years before in 1587. This is now North Carolina, but was then Virginia, named after this Virgin Queen."

Ciao Malgo,in fact times have changed a lot and the girl is certainly more comfortable than the queen, an image almost as famous as Leonardo's Mona Lisa, 3 excellent photos, interesting notes that perfectly explain all the details of the painting. Have a good night and thanks,Luciano

Hello Malgo,
The note is an interesting reminder that many paintings from those days and earlier are packed with symbols that are often hard to understand for people of our times. Both WS provide good complements, but it's pictures like the main upload that make photos from museums fun to watch.
Best regards,

Hello Malgo,
Quite a contrast indeed between the formal dress of the famous Queen Elizabeth and the modern day summer outfit of the visitor. Well spotted and captured together. I wonder what the Virgin Queen would have thought of this.

O brasil teria sido colnia espanhola ? napole縊 teria existido ?
a histria cheia desses eventos especiais..
um abra輟

Hello Malgo, excellent timing so that you captured the striking contrast in clothing between the Queen and a modern day woman.
Your very detailed description of the painting is very interesting and informative.
I wonder what Queen Elizabeth I would make of todays fashions?
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Malgo
I have also read that Queen Elizabeth 1 applied heavy makeup to hide the smallpox scars on her face. Additionally, the white makeup contained toxic materials. Lead and white vinegar. "But applying lead to her face on a daily basis caused major problems, including hair loss and skin deterioration. On top of that, the lead poisoning may have eventually taken the queen's life." A striking contrast between formal and casual attire. Tfs!

Hello Malgo,
Well, you are comparing apples to oranges. Royalty would no be dressed like the visitor even today. You captured a nice contrast, though.

Sure fashion had changed through cen=turies, Malgo, yet I wonder how ladies were able to dress so havily back in time's.
Those days, there were no cameras nor photographers, so painters were depicting what they saw.
Nice combined and titled.
Best regards,
Ike
