Photographer's Note
This shot of Mount Grace Priory is of the west fa軋de. Many of those who have come to know me, know I like to use natural framing devices when the opportunity presents itself, so here is the bell tower framed by the west window.
Founded in 1398 Mount Grace Priory is the best preserved of the ten Carthusian charterhouses found in England. In comparison to the churches of other monastic orders, Carthusian churches were small and simple, because the monks themselves prayed mainly in their own cells. Please use the links to see my previous shots where there is more information.

Hi Kath,
As you did write the other day, yes I like such framings, on your photos as well, looks like the builders of this priory really had photography in mind when designing it ! Well seen and apart from the good yngle you found a technically fine photo !
Have a nice day,

Hi Kath, this one is crying for my theme, so there it goes. Double architectural frame below with a good perspective punctuated with shadows, and another one above, and all this in nice sidelight showing the wall textures. Excellent!
Cheers and all the best for 2007,

Hallo Kath!
A wonderful point of view! The priory framed by itself. I like the aslant light here very much. It somehow emphasizes these venerable buildings!

Hi, Kath. A very good and precise framing with the bell tower well centered in the window and also the cross framed in the door. The light is very good and allows us to see the texture of the walls very well.

A very effective and rather inventive composition here, Kath.
I like how you framed the church tower with the window, and the shadows visible through the lower archway are a good touch. The direction of the light was perfect for this shot.
I'm not sure, but maybe I would have excluded the area of sky at the top of the frame. You wouldn't have been able to do that and include the whole window frame though, so I think you probably made the right choice.
Good work.
Cheers,

Ol Kath, it is a very beautiful framing. I new that you should have one of this, when I saw the POV from the cross side, on the other side of this image. Both parts, upper and bottom framings, are fantastic: the first benefits from the sky and the second from the light and shadow on the grass. I like how the negative on the ground level corresponds to the tower on the first floor. The result is really good!

Hi Kath,
So this is from the opposite direction than the version II. And again the sidelight brings out details. Symmetry and natural framing well in use.

Hello Kath,
Good idea to use elements of the photo to create a frame for other elements, indeed I do it sometimes, I like it.
Here there is double frame, the window frames the tower and the door frames another door, across which yet we can see more things.
Excellent work with the light and beautiful colors. Your composition is good and I like it very much.

Hi Kath,
The framing really does add an attractive dimension; actuallynot only does the window frame the tower but the tower frames the sky as well. Your polorizer is used to good effectiveness as well.

There is a lovely symmetry in this picture. You found the right POV to situate the tower just on the right place in the window. The beautiful skimming light completes this successful picture.

Hej Kath,
I like very much the looking-through-idea of this shot. The arches work as a great frame for the tower behind them. I also like the warm colours of the stone as well as the pleasant sunlight. Very well done and thanks for sharing!

Hi Kath,
A clever use of framing here, as this see through effect to the bell tower and beyond is most effective. There are really two distinct scenes here, the upper part dominated by the sky and bell tower, while the lower portion emphasizes the grassy down to earth part bathed in sunlight and fine shadows. There must be some spiritual significance to such dichotomy! Well captured.

Hi Kath,
It's great! Amazing pov/framing and clarity.
I guess that if you had shot it one minute before or after it would be much less pleasant, as the angle of the sun is just right to enhance dramatically the textures of the walls.
In fact it's so punchy and aparently sharp that I almost missed that strange blur on some areas of the wall - I don't understand what caused them.

Dear Kath,
I love the symmetry and the complex/mysterious yet attractactive compo/framing of your picture.
The eye is almost "tricked" as I was expecting to see the base of a tower through the door (from what I see through the top window) but actually we see another door with a cross at last... great effect! The layers of shadows on the floor add to this mystery...
This is my first visit to your gallery but will surely come back often. Congratulations!

Hi Kath
The framings are perfect. The window at the top framing the tower against the blue sky, while the bottom arch frames the doorway with the green grass with long shadows. The symmetry is perfect & I like the small flower shaped window high up in the tower from where we can peep into the sky. Stunning shot

Hi Kath,
You continue to surprise me for the 2nd time with an even better POV. I really enjoy that even if you have to take a very symmetrical picture here, nothing is very straight or symmetrical anymore in an old building like this. This is absolutely number one of your series. But do not be surprised if I change my mind again if you post a 4th picture. Have a nice week-end.

Hi Kath, not only your framing works extremely well here, but also the strong symmetry. The tower almost looks like levitating in the back. Excellent light conditions that you got here. It looks so warm although I can imagine that it was taken at freezing temperatures.

Hi Kath.
Well I won't comment too much on the quality of this one (other have done that, before I came to this picture!).
I like the multiple framing, the superb light management, and the great DOF selection that allows a perfect sharpness from the very foreground to the background. The vertical tight crop allowed you also to play with an interesting symetry.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello Kath,
This is a wonderful shot of Mout Grace Priory. Years ago when I was a physics post-doc at Oxford, we drove to Yorkshire in search of one of the chuches that had been destroyed during Henry VIII's dissolution of monasteries. Could this have been the edifice, or is it too small. The vantage point for the photograph is very effectve, with the window perfectly framing the tower.
I had discovered the existence of the mystery spheres in Costa Rica from one of your photos, and just today I saw a television program about them. It appears that they were shaped by gently striking them with other stones and knocking off chips. The modern versions were not quite as smooth, but then the ancients obviously developed the skills over generations, and had a much better feel for the technique.
Warm regards,
Bulent
