Tower of silence, a photo from Yazd, East

Photographer's Note

A Dakhma (Persian: دخمه), also known as the Tower of Silence, is a circular, raised structure built by Zoroastrians for excarnation � that is, for dead bodies to be exposed to carrion birds, usually vultures.

Zoroastrian exposure of the dead is first attested in the amid of the -5th century BC Histories of Herodotus, but the use of towers is first documented in the early 9th century CE.[1]:156�162 The doctrinal rationale for exposure is to avoid contact with Earth or Fire, both of which are considered sacred in the Zoroastrian religion.In the Iranian Zoroastrian tradition, the towers were built atop hills or low mountains in desert locations distant from population centers. In the early twentieth century, the Iranian Zoroastrians gradually discontinued their use and began to favour burial or cremation.

Near the Tower of Silence, I showed yesterday, there are some small funeral houses. I found them beautiful with the fine brickworks.
There will be two Workshops.: other funeral house and the view of the whole area from the stairs.

Hello, Malgo!

The view of the mountains outside framed by the door is great, and the light has been very well managed to show that! I also like the silhouette of the man taking a selfie, which adds more life and interest to the scene. Beautiful architectural details captured! Well done!

Hello Malgo,
It's a good composition from inside the interesting building and with the view of the hill and tower nicely framed by the arch. The light was difficult but we get a good view of the details of the interior. We don't see the man's face so clearly, but I agree the roof is more important. The WS of the other house is also very well composed, while the view from the stairs is interesting for showing us the city in the distance.

Love the framing and depth in this strong composition with clear bg interest too. The fact that you've also kept in the detail of the beautiful ceiling adds visual interest and strengthened by the stark contrast of the visitors. However the bg colours looks unnatural and seriously need corrections. That said, it's a nice record shot.

Hello, the funeral house arcade frames well the tower of silence on the hill in the bg. These towers exist also in Mumbai where the wealthy Parsi community is settled originally from Iran. The dead bodies are not burned but the crows, the vultures eat them. A man is taking a selfie at the same time. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

Swietna seria zdjec. Gdy miasto nie bylo tak rozbudowane bylo od ludzich osiedli pewnie zdecydowanie dalej - ale brano to zapewne pod uwage przy wyborze lokalizacji.
Tez mi sie podoba architektura tych domow widzianych ze wzgorza

Hello Malgo,

Again, your notes, accompanying the photographs, are very interesting. I seem to learn so much on TE which I really appreciate!

I like all three photographs, each adding a little extra to the information I had assimilated from your notes. I must admit, I had assumed that this Tower of Silence was really remote and was surprised to see the b/g city, in your w/s.
I love the different moods that you develop by using different viewpoints.

Witaj Malgorzata This is a very pleasant viewing to the kingdom
of the long-dead people because it is easy to look at all the details, equally inside and out of the funerary building; probably due to low light outside. Pozdrawiam.
