Photographer's Note

The old city of Damascus is considered to be among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It was founded in the third millennium B.C. Some mosques and tombs survive from the Middle Ages but most of the city now dates from the Ottoman Empire of the early 16th century. The walls are drab in part because ornamentation was taxed.
