Photographer's Note

Ma'loula, a UNESCO World Heritage town 56 km northeast of Damascus has a population of under 5,000. It is one of the few places where Western Aramaic language, spoken by Jesus Christ, is still spoken. The town contains Greek Orthodox and Greek Catholic monasteries. I had the experience of being inside one of the 4th century monasteries when a young woman said a prayer in Aramaic. Due to the thickness of the stone walls, it was cool inside (no photos allowed). I believe that all who were present were touched by her recitation, even though I understood none of the words. It was an experience out of ancient times. Unfortunately, Ma'loula has suffered greatly in the civil war; the Monastery of St. Sergius has been destroyed.
