Photographer's Note

This photograph was taken in Izmir in Kemeraltı

A barrel or cask is a hollow cylindrical container, traditionally made of wood staves and bound with iron hoops. The term "barrel" typically refers to wooden vessels that are small enough to be moved by hand, up to puncheon size (see below). Someone who makes such (wooden, iron-bound) barrels is known as a cooper. Contemporary barrels are also made of aluminium and plastic.

Fı�ı, enli ağa� şeritlerinin (fı�ı tahtası) ağa� veya metal 軻mberlerle tutturulması yoluyla yapılan, b�y�k, silindir bi輅mindeki dayanıklı kap.

Y�zyıl tarih輅lerinden Roma'lı Plinus'a (Yaşlı) ge fı�ıcılık zanaatı, ilk olarak Alp bgesinde yaşayan kl�ler arasında gelişmiştir.

Kuru �r�nlerin korunmasında kullanılan fı�ılar, 軋m veya başka yumuşak ağa� t�rlerinden hazırlanan fı�ı tahtalarının gevşek bir bi輅mde tutturulması yoluyla yapılır. Ama i輅ne sıvı konulan fı�ılar ak meşe gibi daha dayanıkla malzemeden �retilir. Bunların yapımı daha dikkatli bir iş輅lik gerektirir.

Fı�ı tahtalarıyla kapakların (ayna) yapıldığı ağa� malzeme en az 1 yıl havada kurutulduktan sonra, 10-20 g�n kadar da ocakta kurutulur, ardından istenilen boyutlarda, şeritler halinde kesilerek 軻şitli bitirme işlemlerinden ge輅rilir. Fı�ı yapımında en fazla dikkat isteyen işlem, fı�ı tahtalarını, aralarında boşluk kalmayacak bi輅mde ve fı�ıya d�zg�n oval bir yapı kazandıracak bi輅mde birleştirmektir. Karın b�m�n�n şişkin olması, fı�ıyı i� basınca karşı dayanıklı hale getirir.

Fı�ı tahtaları, ce alt ve �st b�mlerinden bir 軻mberle tutturularak ge輅輅 olarak birleştirilir. Bundan sonra bir buhar t�nelinden ge輅rilerek yumuşatılır ve son bi輅mini alması sağlanır, ardından da kurutulur. Dinlenmeye bırakılacak viskiler i輅n hazırlanan fı�ıların i輅 bu aşamada ayrıca kavrulur. Bu işlemden sonra, fı�ıların ağız b�mleri yeniden d�zleştirilir ve ge輅ci 軻mberler �ıkarılarak asıl metal 軻mberler takılır.

G�n�m�zde 輟ğu uygulama alnında ağa� fı�ılarının yerini yapımı daha kolay olan ve ucuza mal edilen metal variller, kontrplak veya sert kartondan kutular almıştır.

The barrels lit by the strong sunshine coming from the left make a very interesting pattern. It's only pity that there is too much OE, although it doesn't look easy to avoid.

I remember to have seen, when I was child, these barrels in the wine cellars of the farmers that produced the wine. TFS this beautiful image!
