Photographer's Note

This is the Edirne Municipality New Wedding Hall off of the northern end of Tundzha Bridge. When we got near it, we saw a sign that read "Wedding celebrations are no longer held here." At the time, I thought it was COVID related. When I did an internet search, I found a juicier story.

According to secular sources, this used to be the "Electricity Factory" (power station) of Edirne. It was built in 1930 and was closed in 1980. Edirne Municipality decided to restore it and turn it into a cultural center and wedding hall. Restoration work was started in 2015 and finished in 2017. However, Muslim fundamentalists did not like this idea because of this building's proximity to an old cemetery.

The fundametalists' article (https://www.memurlar.net/haber/787042/edirne-deki-islam-mezarligi-uzerine-nikah-salonu-yapildi.html) claims that the municipality built a wedding hall on a Muslim cemetery. The article blames those who tried to have the ezan (Muslim call to prayer) recited in Turkish for shielding the municipality.

The secularist press (http://www.vatandasgazetesi.com.tr/gundem/tarihi-binada-nikah-yasagi-h3265.html) reports: "Citizens, who stated that the building had remained in ruins for many years and gained value after being restored, said, 'When the building was in ruins, no one was dealing with it. When it was restored, they first tried to expropriate it by saying that it was a cemetery, and when it didn't work, they prevented the people of Edirne from getting married there [by taking it to court]'".

Well it turns out this building is a source of controversy.
