Photographer's Note

Galata Bridge seems to be a favorite fishing spot. This is the fifth bridge at this location. The first bridge, called Cisr-i Cedid (Jisri Jedid, New Bridge in Ottoman Turkish) was built in 1845. All the bridges after that one have been called Galata Bridge. The second Galata Bridge was built in 1863, Third in 1875, Fourth in 1912 and the Fifth in 1992.

The longest lasting bridge was the Fourth Galata Bridge and that is the one I remember crossing when I lived in Istanbul. It was a floating bridge and I loved the gentle rocking of the bridge as we crossed it. It was badly damaged in a fire in 1992 and this new bascule bridge was built a few meters from the old location.
