İstanbul Archeology Museum is now hosting this famous sculpture from the British Museum. The following information is written on the plate:
"The discobolus was copied in marble from an original sculpture cast in bronze by the famous Greek 5th century BC sculptor, Myron. It embodies a concept of ideal beauty that was current in Myron's day. The Townly Discobolus is one of the most famous images of the ancient world. It was found in 1791 in the great villa of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, in Tivoli, Italy. The sculpture was bought by the British collector Charles Townley, and was displayed in his house-museum in London. Upon his death in 1805, it was acquired by the British Museum. When found, it was missing its head. An ancient but alien head was fitted to its body. Contrversially, this was made to look forward instead of back. The original head must have turned back towards the hand that holds the discus. The discus thrower does not represent the real life action of an athlete. Rather, head, torso,limbs are composed as a series of opposite forces. Parts of the body are arranged to conform with the Greek ideas of balance, symmetry, harmony, rythm and proportion. These proportions were looked for not only in the statues but also in the living body."

The sculpture will be exhibited until Apr 4,2010.

Istanbul Archeology Museums, which were established as M�ze-i Humayun (Empire Museum) by the famous artist and museum director Osman Hamdi Bey at the end of the 19th century, were opened to public on June 13, 1891.
