Cappadocia Landscape, a photo from Nevsehir, Central Anatolia

Photographer's Note

If you look carefully you can spot 2 sets of windows & a door, where homes and churches have been carved into the soft, volcanic tuff rock. There are also a few fairy chimneys or hoodoos as they are known in North America. Where did the volcanic ash come from? There are still 2 dormant volcanoes in the region: Hasan Dag to the west (last erupted 8,200 years ago) and Erclyes Dag to the east (last erupted 9,000 years ago), along with several other dormant and extinct volcanoes. I've added a little more contrast and saturation to the original image as it was hazy and a little washed out in colours. The D on its side shaped niches in the fg were for pigeons and their eggs. The ancient Greeks and Byzantines settled here many centuries ago before the arrival of both the Selchuk and Ottoman Turks.

A fantastic photo of these amazing rock formations. Your vantage point offers a beautiful overview of the place. The shapes of the rocks look great and are nicely alternated with some patches of green.

Hello Chris,
It's a fascinating scenery but just as fascinating are the signs of ordinary human life inside these rocks. They could easily have been overlooked if you hadn't pointed them out. A few years ago a very good film called "Winter Sleep" was shot in this area, partly inside such modern cave dwellings. It's a long and slow film but very cleverly made. It was awarded the Golden Palm at Cannes in 2014 and should be available from streaming sites.

Hi Chris,
Grear focus on the fragment of the landscape itself. WE can enjoy the rough surface pf the rocks. The rock formations are quite extraordinary and it was definitely my favourite place to visit in Turkey, however being part of an organized tour even in two days there I feel I would like to go there again.
