The Freedom Arches

Here痴 another photo taken at the Nathan Phillips Square in the heart of Toronto. This photo shows the Reflecting Pool, which is located in front of the Old City Hall.

The Reflecting Pool is located in the south-east corner of the square and is used as an ice skating rink in winter. Three concrete arches span the pool, which started out as merely an architectural feature when the square was designed in the 1960s, but in 1989, they were dedicated as The Freedom Arches, commemorating people who had fought for freedom. At the same time, a piece of the Berlin Wall was installed at the base of one of the arches.

In the background, you can see the Old City Hall, a Romanesque Revival building from 1899. It served as the City Hall for Toronto until 1966 and is now still used by the Ontario Court of Justice.

I wondered if you would be able to make a feature from these Freedom Arches. The answer is YES. This really is a great way to use them! They act like an irresistible guide towards the eclectic, towering buildings. Of course, the beautiful, Old City Hall, is carefully framed, too.

This big lot in front of Toronto's city-hall building, is a modern and from a very later time after my visit, as I do not remember seeing this magnificent arch over the waterjets, Lars.

Dag Lars The old City Hall, despite its appealing design, appears as a vintage unfortunate building caught in the cross-fire of futuristic structures; these arches and those giant buildings of backdrop. It might soon feel overwhelmed by the daring of the new generations as elderly people do! This flawless depiction confirms the Latin saying: Tempus fugit.

Huge contrasts in this composition, the Town Hall recalling Romanesque lines, breaking with the modern towers that emerge from behind it, the fountain with those large metal arches is another remarkable contrast, but the image is pleasant.
A magnificent color, which gives the image a lot of chromatic richness.

In my picture made just three years ago, in February 2016, there is no building above the middle of the City Hall. Reflecting pool but the surface is wrinkled and there are no reflections. Excellent symmetry.

Dag Lars, ik heb nog veel foto's van jou om te bekijken. Ik begin met deze, want ik vind de ronde bogen erg mooi. Hmm, nu had ik net een critic geschreven, maar ik ben verleerd hoe de site werkt. Blijkbaar had ik hem niet bevestigd, dus nu nog maar een keertje.

Great POV for this beautiful view. It looks like you're standing in the fountain. :-) Those sweeping arches are great, and I like seeing the old City Hall. It looks like a modern skyscraper is going up right behind it. Some very wealthy people will probably live there. :-)
