Photographer's Note
Another shot in the mini-series I'm posting on the 20th anniversary of the opening of Vancouver's Expo 86. Expo 86 was a world's fair which helped to transform the city. The area surrounding False Creek (the body of water in the photo) used to be all industrial, but that was all moved or demolished to make way for the fair. After the fair ended, the land was converted to apartment buildings in a huge development that is continuing even 20 years later. It's a popular neihgbourhood with all the services you can imagine, including this water taxi (Aquabus) which will give you a ride across the water to the south side, for $1 or $2 depending on where you are going. I photographed this one was coming in to the dock, as it turns out, he was coming to pick me up because he thought I was waiting for a ride. I wasn't, and he was not too happy with me for standing at the (aqua)bus stop.

Great composition and a sharp image - your colours really "pop"! Probably the polarizer. Well done!

Alvin this photo I like better than your previous posting. The water taxi in the fore-water really adds incredible depth to this scene. It seems that the action is frozen in time and with very pleasing results. I can see incredible detail from your D200 as well. I have this gut feeling that you are very happy with your new camera. Nice one Alvin!

Hello Alvin, I live very much this composition. Great perspective. I love the color of the boat. It is a nice focus point, and contrast a lot with the pale colors of the rest of the background.. Beautiful skyline, perspective and definition. Congrats. Gabriel

Hi Alvin - well the same thing happened to me just a week ago at the stop on Granville Island - a very nice take on the boat abd False Creek - I never really got to see reflections like this when I was there thus reducing the photo-dramatic potentials somewhat! A very nice shot .
best wishes Kev

Great result and the price you paid by beating berated by the driver was well worth it! :) The softer curves of the aquabus really complement the the verticals of the background towers. Like how it gives a lot of depth from front to back.

Hi Alvin;
The composition here is superb, as is the sharpness and natural colors.
Just one suggestion (maybe it's my monitor), but the photo does seem to have a 'washed' feel to it- which I think could be sorted with a level adjustment.
I'll try a workshop when I get home.
Cheers Alvin!

Hola Alvin.
The aqua bus and yachts break the monochromatic color of your picture, nice color contrast with the rest of the skylines. Good POV, compo and reflection. Well done and TFS.

Wow, the light in this one is nothing short of stunning, Alvin, and as it seems the polarizer made the colors pop even more. Fine details all over, good use of the Aquabus as a compositional anchor, and nice reflections. It doesn't visibly suffer a lot from compression, I think, but I can imagine that in full size this looks even more vivid and striking. Nice one, goes to my favorites.

An excellent work with the polariser, Alvin!
The water surface is just like a mirror and the whole image has this feeling of an oil painting,

Hi Alvin,
This is a school case to show how pleasant the morning light is !
It's effect on the background buildings reflection is lovely and the brightly colors well placed foreground boat adds a convenient and dynamic balance. May I be once neatpicking ? I'd have loved to see the full boat reflection with a somehwat wider framing...
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hi Alvin,
An outstanding shot of this harbour scene, with superb lighting, reflections, and clarity. I especially like the way you have framed the colourful little water taxi in the foreground. This is classic composition, Alvin. Congratulations.

Hi Alvin,
Waw...! Such a beautiful reflections, nice colors and sharp image... This cityscape on background looks very impressive with the reflections on the water. Also, I like very much the boat on foregroud with the colorful sign on it, giving to this picture some additional feelings about this place.. like feeling on the big holiday :)... Very good shot, BRAVO!

Hello Alvin,
I love this shot of False Creek with the Aquabus in the foreground. I love the light in this photo and the beautiful reflections on the calm water.
Haha, you made the aquabus driver come all that way and then you don't get on it...hehe. But at least you've got an amazing shot out of it which was definitely worth it to get him over there!
Great composition with amazing details and great sharpness! Well done, Alvin!

Hi Alvin, This image has a true surrealist feel to it. This cute water taxi/bus floating against the ultra modern skyline of Vancouver is simply excellent. The colours are once again out of the world in this shot, simply gorgeous. Very well composed this one and I love the movement of the water as the bus is just about to pass by. Excellent job! Sabine

Hello Alvin,
Crystal clear picture, i'm amazed by the sharpness and the general quality of this picture. This lens is a gem and it seems to take advantage perfectly of the 10 mp of your D200.
Superb view over these buildings.

This is marvelleous, I thought I comented on this one before, maybe it got erased by mistake, anyway perhaps the best of the series, the clouds, the reflections, the sky all come together in this pespective, and oh what a light.
Edit - colours washed out - no, but perhaps I would decrease green a bit.

An excellent serie of Vancouver but this one is outstanding, what a light management and glossy look, all managed out of 400ISO, incredible sharp till the finest details. An excellent edition in colors and light of the shot, some may feel it a bit too shiney by NeatImage but here with this sunspots it gives a special feeling way above reality like a dream.
Very well done Alvin, thanks, goes to my enlarged fav.

I found it quite impossible not to love this photo.
What a splendid composition of colors and slightly unrealistic shapes of 'things'.
Reflexions in the water - the most wonderfull reflexions of them all.
Is this still my coutry...?
Falling in love again once more
Thanks pal

hi Alvin, what can i add to all those comments...? i probably love the photo for the same reasons that other trekkers, the colours, the late afternoon (?)light, the composition. somehow, instead of distance taht i usually feel for cities, there's a warm attaction to this one in your photo....lovely one.

The round and colorful water taxi and the straight monotone buildings! Reflection in the water! Forground and background! This photo is a winner.
droskey (3) 2006-08-25 14:19
This photo couldn't be any better. The colors do really pop out at you particularly on the water taxi. My eye is introduced to the photo by the colorful taxi and then led into the middle ground by the little bits of red that contrast nicely with the cool blue sky. I then find my focus shifts to the vertical lines of the buildings in the background and brought back forward on the ripples of water.
For some reason I really like that the aquabus driver's head is tilted too. Very nice!
