BC Parliament

The day after our TE-meeting we visited Vancouver Island and the city of Victoria, which is the capital of the province of British Columbia (BC). In the heart of the city are the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, which houses the BC Legislative Assembly.

Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, 100km away from both Vancouver (northeast) and Seattle (southeast). It is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific Northwest, it started out as a British settlement in 1843 and was named for Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The Neo-Baroque buildings for the provincial parliament were constructed in the 1890s and completed in 1897. The front lawn features a number of monuments and artworks, including a statue of Queen Victoria, the Cenotaph commemorating the victims from BC of WWI, WW2, and the Korean and Afghanistan War, and the sculpture seen in this photo, which is called the Knowledge Totem Pole. It was carved by Coast Salish artist Cicero August and created for the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Hello Lars, I remember that Craig went to see this capital city of BC District only last year. And what a magnificent building it is. Fantastic composition with this totem pole in the foreground. Hello Lars, excellent composition with the totem pole attracting our attention in the foreground before we take in the magnificent Parliament buildings.
The sharp focusing enables us to enjoy all the beautiful details.
The flowers add an extra splash of colour and complete the scene.

Detta 舐 en v舁digt v舁 komponerad bild med perfekt balans mellan totemp虱en och parlamentsbyggnadens kupol. P虱en i sig 舐 ett ovanligt fint exempel p� offentlig konst. ﾄven om den 舐 ny s� antar jag att den bygger p� urgamla traditioner. Och vilket fantastiskt namn konstn舐en har! This is a very well chosen viewpoint, to include the totem pole. Suddenly, you have added art, history and creativity to the photograph of the Parliament Buildings!

Lars, that gorgeous building looks like Belfast city hall with its green dome. A green space with a perfectly maintained lawn and colorful flowers is located in front of the parliament. Good idea to include the totem pole in the fg.

Dag Lars Amazingly you got much depth of field at the wide opening of f3.2! I will have to take more photography lessons!
These two icons of yesteryears, one thin and the other portly, are beautifully set in your frame and complement one another for an exciting visual balance. Nice control on shadows too showing the best of shaded details. I envy this superb picture!

This totem pole was not here in 2008 but looks great in front of the Parliament building. There was a totem pole museum over to the left about 400 metres which I visited. Good colour, sharpness and saturation. Tfs!

In these next two months, I will have less time to devote to TE, because I will be very busy preparing a change of address and also a city.
The composition that shows us in the best POV this beautiful building of parliament, the totem that we see in the foreground is an extraordinary work and is a great complement to the composition.
Very effective color, which highlights the details of the image.
A good management, both of the luminosity, as of the sharpness.

yes, this is the one i like the most. Living here, well, not in Victoria but you know what I mean - i get to see many shots of these parliament buildings. This is the first time I've seen THIS view using the totem pole like that. bravo my friend, enough said! cheers

De totempaal is meer dan een blikvanger op de voorgrond van deze foto van de parlementsgebouwen.
Ik vraag me af of je in Canada (of in de USA) ook totempalen gezien hebt die door de inheemse bevolking gemaakt werden en vroeger ergens geplaatst stonden.
De kleuren van de totempaal passen bij de kleuren van het plantsoen er achter.
Een heel goede hoek om het parlement te tonen.

Zo地 pseudo indianen totempaal voor zo地 lelijke neobarok gebouw is als je er over nadenkt een slechte combinatie, maar aan de andere kant ook een boeiend voorbeeld hoe men recht probeert de doen aan onze fouten in het verleden.

Very nice view of BC's state house. Victoria is such a charming city and the waterfront behind you is always filled with activity. Wonderful time of day as the sun helps brighten the detail in the stone bricks around the building. perfect point of view with the full totem nicely spaced within the scene. Good work!

I am back home. Yes, it was a nice trip, but it was exhaustive as many of my trips, because I want to see so many things in few time.
I saw a canadian pole like this in london, and I guess there was one in a garden in china. it is an amazing traditional form of art. nice contrast with the traditional architecture ahead.

this buildings reminds me somehow the Berliner Dom.
Great architecture, so elegant!
Interesting combination with the totem pole contrasting with its style and material it was built with.
Great colors and sharpness, I like the diagonal clouds pattern to top it up.
