Victoria Waterfront

Here痴 another impression of a relaxed afternoon in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia (BC), which is located on Vancouver Island. Seen in this picture are the Inner Harbour, the Empress Hotel and Government Street.

Victoria, named for Queen Victoria and founded by British settlers in 1843, has been the capital of BC ever since it became the sixth Canadian province in 1871. The city has got about 86,000 inhabitants and is located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

The Fairmont Empress Hotel opened in 1908 and was built in Ch穰eauesque style. Developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway company, it is one of Canada痴 grand railway hotels. Its style and design looks very similar to those of the hotels the Fairmont Ch穰eau Frontenac in Qu饕ec and the Fairmont Ch穰eau Laurier in Ottawa.

Damn, you got some really good pov's in Victoria. I didn't see this one, and i really like the totem pole shot you took as well. Very good choice of pov's, they both work SO well. lovely light and weather conditions too. awesome posts

Hello Lars,

I'm impressed by the number of details that you have included in your photograph, with excellent clarity.
The curve of the wall as well included, creating an unexpectedly inviting guide line. There are figures to observe to the left of it and beautiful buildings to the right, the chateauesque hotel being the most important.

Grote gebouwen met Europese uitstraling maar een gezellige boulevard voor de wandelaars met zelfs nog wat ruimte voor boompjes. Mooi totaalplaatje.

Hej Lars,
Men... var 舐 skyskraporna och glasfasaderna med konstiga speglingar? ;-) Detta 舐 en ovanligt gammaldags och "normal" stadsbild f att vara i Nordamerika. Det kunde ha varit Europa. Det 舐 kanske d舐f det k舅ns som en trygg och v舁bekant milj�, fast jag aldrig har varit d舐. Hotellet 舐 pampigt och fmodligen alldeles f dyrt f mig, men det g sig bra p� bild.

Lars, the Empress hotel building commands respect, it is dominating majestically Vancouver waterfront. A promenade is planned to stroll on the quay. Trees and flowers embellish the place. Excellent light, good depth.

Hello Lars, I do not know any Canadian history, but surely there must be some French influence for the hotels all to have the same 'Chateau' styling?
This is a lovely sharp and colourful scene.
The people enliven the picture, and the displays of flowers add lovely dots of colour across the view.

Hello Lars

So that's what it looks like. Back in the 80s I live on Whidbey Island, Washington state and could see the light of Victoria from my front porch. I could see them across the Puget sound or straights of Juan de Fuca. Always a welcome sight to have a clear night for the view. Nice capture.

A bright summer day brought people out to the wonderful promenade on two levels, Lars.
That scaled the whole sight from waterfront to the impressive styled buildings.
Flowers colors stand out upon the grey stones, a marvelous sight collected.

Hallo Lars,
Het mooie hotel doet me een klein beetje denken aan het kasteel Frontenac in Qu饕ec.
De bomen en bloemen aan weerszijden van de straat zorgen voor meer rust en kleur in het stadsbeeld.
Het lijkt aangenaam en ontspannen kuieren langs de waterkant.
De blauwe lucht met lichte witte wolken geven de foto een mooie achtergrond.

Hi Lars,
I think when I was commenting on your other photo recently I clicked on "Comment" instead of "Critique" I think the same effect but it does not add two points for the smiley and also I always don't notice the Comments myself because I always check the Critiques Received. I am sorry about it, I used my daughter's tables when writing it and I struggled with it a bit :)

Dag Lars,
Craig is waarschijnlijk zo op zoek naar vervallen huizen en non-toerist plaatsen dat hij dit waterfront vol met toeristen tot dusver over het hoofd heeft gezien. Hij had voor ons ook weer een nieuwe plak gevonden.

Dag Lars I see lot of beauty provided on two stories: The mighty cityscape has the best seat for an overlook at the arbour while the beautifully-decorated-with-trees low promenade
constitutes a necessary haven of peace in town. Outstanding perspective!

I love the perspective, colours and viewpoint of a vibrant waterfront with wealth of detail along with the imposing architecture as strong pointer. There's much more to explore in this that you have done well with the exposure for it does look pleasantly balanced throughout. Human input is always vital as shown but also I love the speck of vivid colours to spice up the whole capture. Excellent

the style of the buildings looks similar those we can see in quebec or montreal images. nice details of the area and the people around. I guess these yours photos are the only ones I saw from this town.
