Photographer's Note

The St. Eugene church seen here is located between Cranbrook and Kimberly on a native reserve. It was built in 1897 under the vision and guidance of a catholic priest. It is one of the most intricately ornate wooden church structures in British columbia. The church is in generally good condition but needs paint and some minor repairs on the exterior. I was unable to enter the building to see the inside. The church was part of the St. Eugene Mission which included a large residential school. The large school facility has since been renovated, enlarged, and brought back to life as a new golf resort and casino. I felt a sense of sadness as I contemplated that the original religious mission has been changed to accommodate today's pleasures.
