Photographer's Note
Vancouver on a foggy morning. It was pretty gloomy down in the city, but I drove up to a viewpoint on a nearby mountain (Cypress Lookout) and took some shots of the city while looking down on the fog from above. This shows parts of Vancouver that are out of the fog, with nearby farming areas and then mountains in the distance. I've just recently started playing with some long lenses - in this case a 180mm lens, which on my camera translates to a 270mm on a film SLR. This was cropped to about half the frame, so it's equivalent to about 500mm. The mountain in this picture is about 100km away, and the different areas of the city may look close together but they are actually very far apart.

Amazing shot, Alvin. The compressing effect of the long lens is well utilized in this one, and it is one of the best uses of horizontal layering that I have ever seen in any photo on TE. Nice golden tonality created by the morning sun, and great how the highrises make an appearance atop the haze and fog. Almost like a dream scene - congratulations, well done.

Hola Alvin.
Very good perspective with nice separation of the city by the fog, the mountains in the back give your picture a good sense of depth. You captured it very nicely and your POV is excellent. Good work.
TFS.

Good evening Alvin. I am certain you took this one the same time as Terrain. I have always wanted to find a place in the morning for such a capture in the valley.
The layers of fog, clouds and mist are really nice to see with the viewpoint over from above. It must have been a wonderful morning when you took this one Alvin. You were standing relaxed like when you took this shot while I was sweating my way up the Grouse Grind.
Excellent work and a real pleasure to view. A new favorite of mine too!

Wow, Alvin, this is really spectacular! I like how the contrasts are strong in the foreground, despite the fog. The monochrome is nice--from filter/PP, or natural? Compositionally perhaps the highest peak should not be so centered, but I am being extremely picky. I like it! Regards, Ken.

Hello Alvin,
I really love this image.
The golden light over the city and this sea of clouds added to the moutains appearing in the distance form a magnificent landscape. It is like if everything is unreal and you just wonder when you see the image if it is a dream or reality.
Congratulations for this wonderful shot :o)
Best regards. Christian

I LOVE above the fog pictures :-)
Here I like how you used the long lens and contrasts, it almost looks like the city is nothing more than a few stripes of paper in a galanty show. Also great, how the fog flows in the foreground.
Did you consider cropping out the mountains? To me it feels a bit disconnected with the rest of the image.

Hello Alvin! Very nice work here and that lens appears really sharp. You really exploited the telephoto well to compress the horizontal elements of the scene into an easily view pattern. The silhoutte works perfectly here too, very well done!

Hi Alvin,
Another nice early bird view, I like here the early subtle warming of the fog and the buildings emerging above it look a bit irreal, a different and nice way to show Vancouver for sure !
Have a nice day,

Hello Alvin,
This is an impressive shot with Mount Baker towering over the foggy valley and the building sticking out above the clouds. Great mood with the yellowish hue in this photo. Great composition with excellent lighting!

Hi Alvin,
A superb and surrealistic view of the city. I like the monochromatic feel of this scene. The foreground of textured, fluffy clouds really works well as a lead-in, while the mountain provides a perfect backdrop. A skilful captured and very effective, Alvin. Congrats on this one.

Hi Alvin - excellent timing, the layers of cloud alternating with ridgetops and buildings look very attrractive, the long lens gives the illusion that it was taken from an aircraft, the visibility of the mountain so far away is also impressive.

Oh Alvin! What a view! The different layers of fog, of the areas of the city, of the mountain range, all blending in a very harmonious way, are just pure beauty. I especially like the thick fog (almost clouds!) in the foreground. Your 180mm lens has done miracle here. What else to say...
A poetical photo.
