This is a shot of the extent of Indiana Dunes State Park to the east. The title for this photo, Nature痴 End, has a twofold allusion. The first is what we see in the photo: Northern Indiana Public Service Company痴 (NIPSCO) coal and natural gas-fired power plant, Michigan City Generating Station, provides quite a contrast to lush green dunes of the park beyond its eastern boundary.

The other allusion is to the history of where the power plant is located. A century ago, the land where the power plant is located was occupied by the Hoosier Slide, Indiana痴 most famous landmark. The Hoosier Slide stood 200 feet tall, easily dwarfing the other sand dunes between Lake Michigan and Michigan City. However, after it was discovered that this dune痴 sand was not only of high quality, but provided a distinctive blue color to glass jars, the Hoosier Slide disappeared by the shovelful to be melted down for glass. Today, we only have postcards, photos, written accounts, and Mason jars with a distinctive blue tint to remind us of this landmark. By 1920, the Hoosier Slide was nothing more than an expanse of flat sandy soil which was eventually sold to NIPSCO.

But nothing lasts forever. In 2018, NIPSCO announced that they would be closing the plant by 2028. Let us hope that it does not remain an eyesore but is converted to an esthetically pleasing facility for nature lovers.
