This photo shows the top of the dune where the path gets almost level. Here, it is hard to tell we are on a sand dune with all the trees around.

The beaches were formed by winds coming off Lake Michigan, which drop sand when the wind hits plants, dunes, and hills. As the lake level of Lake Michigan dropped at the end of the Ice Age, the shoreline receded, and new dunes were formed along the lakeshore. Vegetation took over the previous dunes, and eventually forests grew on top of them. The winds moved sand and piled it into dunes. As the dunes formed, plants began to take hold, stabilizing the sand. Beach grasses formed a large underground system of roots. This root system created stable areas of sand, from which the dune could grow. Slowly other plants took root in the protected areas, including bearberry (kinnikinnick) and small evergreens. Over time, larger plants like sumac, sand cherry, cottonwood, and juniper took hold and replaced the grasses and smaller plants. (From Wikipedia.)

Bu fotoğraf, yolun neredeyse d�zleştiği kumulun �st kısmını g�sterir. Burada, etraftaki t�m ağa輙arın bulunduğu bir kum tepesinde olduğumuzu s�ylemek zor.

Plajlar, r�zgarın bitki, kumul ve tepelere 軋rptığında kumunu d�ş�rd�ğ� Michigan G�l�'nden gelen r�zgarlardan oluşuyordu. Michigan G�l�'n�n g�l seviyesi Buzul ﾇağı'nın sonunda d�şt�ğ� i輅n kıyı şeridi geriledi ve g�l kıyısı boyunca yeni kumullar oluştu. Bitki �rt�s� �nceki kumulları devraldı ve nihayetinde ormanlar b�y�d�. R�zgarlar kumu hareket ettirdi ve kum tepelerine yığıldı. Kumullar oluştuğunda, bitkiler kumu stabilize ederek tutmaya başladı. Plaj otları b�y�k bir yeraltı k�k sistemi oluşturdu. Bu k�k sistemi, kumulun b�y�yebileceği istikrarlı kum alanları yarattı. Yavaş yavaş diğer bitkiler, ayıyemişi (kinnikinnick) ve k�錮k yaprak d�kmeyenler de dahil olmak �zere, korunan alanlarda k�k saldı. Zamanla sumak, kum kirazı, pamuk ağacı ve ardı� gibi daha b�y�k bitkiler tutuldu ve otların ve daha k�錮k bitkilerin yerini aldı. (Vikipedi壇en.)
