Photographer's Note
The best way to view the pictures is to use the 3 links below.
Portrait or Landscape
It is sometimes difficult to choose whether you should take a photo in portrait or landscape format.
It depends on the long lines in the composition to determine the best solution.
Here in the large hall of the Oculus you can choose for both options.
The roof construction with the long skylight gives a long vertical line that can best be captured in a portrait format Picture one.
The long curved shape of the truss construction, however, gives a strong horizontal impression, so that also a photo with a horizontal format produces here a strong composition Picture two.
A solution with a square photo on which both the horizontal line and the vertical line is not the solution because the long lines are competing with each other in your eyes, which weakens the attention for both.
Unfortunately I don't have a photo in a square format to show that.

Hallo Rob
Vertical was the right choice here imho. A good upward pov and the people add scale and animate the scene. Nice shadow play at right where the sunlight is streaming down. Tfs!

Bonjour, cher Rob,

Hello Rob,
I think that by now the Oculus is one of the most famous buildings in the world for followers of TE. Today's three photos once again show us the almost endless photo opportunities it offers. Verticals, horizontals, architectural details, "street-photos" of people, abstracts they are all possible. The skylight in #3 is a very elegant composition but the main photo combining the ceiling with a closer view of people (at least two taking their own photos) nicely combines the styles I like.
Best regards,
Gert

Hi Rob
I've been viewing your shots on FB, you have some good one's to post, looking forward to it :) Speaking of good, this is awesome. If I lived in NYC this would be a place I'd be spending a lot of time at, there are great photos to be taken here. When I visited 2 years ago they didn't have these seats on the floor, they add a lot. love the strip of light and the fact you got a girl posing at the right moment. Nice one indeed. cheers

Hi Rob,
The presence of the people is animating the scene. The length of the hall is creating depth. The point of view is showing the details of the architecture of the Oculus. Have a nice day.

Dag Rob,
Heerlijke grafische foto met een mooie constructive.
Maar het licht above heft een schitterend effect.
Toevoeging van mensen is altijd leuk op dergelijke beelden.
heel mooi foto werk, bedankt.

Hi Rob
A mind blowing stuff with your smart vertical format - an interior architecture and a real delight with its painstaking smooth detail highlighting all the repeats. An engaging dynamic composition with equally interesting features on the bottom level as it sits very well on the eye under available daylight with superb colour rendition. Awesome shot, Congrats

Hallo Rob,
Uitstekend lichtbeheer. Mooie kleurrijke en sfeervolle voorgrond.
Vele groeten en veel succes in Noord-Amerika,
Paul

Hi Rob
I know what you mean when you say a square photo would not be a solution. I like both photos (in fact all three, but the ones with people are of course special). I think I prefer the portrait format (by a small margin only), because it makes for a minimalist composition with a lot of the roof shown and people at the bottom. Also, I like the colourful scene with travellers taken photos, all in the beam of light, resembling limelight on the stage. But that of course doesn't help with which format shows the interior itself at its best! :-)
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Rob,
Views from the balcony seem to be more popular, so I like that you chose this POV for the main photo. The play of light and shadow is great, and I like those funky benches, too. I never get tired of seeing the Oculus. :-)

Hi rOb
Only you in the airport is interested by the geometry, the other persons prefer selfies of to be taken in picture. Your main post is really amazing.

Hello Rob,
I love these!
I not exaggerating when I say, they made me take a deep intake of breath!
For me, the vertical ones just have the edge, raising the eyes as they traverse upwards, giving the impression of opening wings!
I just love this place and would love to photograph it myself, one day!
Have a good day,
Bev :-)
