Photographer's Note

The Missions National Park near San Antonio consists of four missions from the Spanish era. This image is of the old granary at the San Jos mission, the best-preserved of the four.

The Granary was built about 1726 and was later used as a residence in the late 19th century. Restoration began during the Great Depression using WPA funds and labor under the direction of the San Antonio Conservation Society (see here for more detailed information). The success of this restoration made it possible to restore the rest of the mission (see here for another image of the mission); in 1941, all the buildings and land were donated to the state of Texas, and later given to the National Park Service.
