Photographer's Note
We are in the Standing Up by Sitting Down: Student Sit-ins 1960 exhibit of National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee. On the right wall are words by Ella Baker: "We want the world to know that we no longer accept the inferior position of second class citizenship. We are willing to go to jail, be ridiculed, spat upon and even suffer physical violence to obtain first class citizenship." According to the museum website, this is the original lunch counter, along with three-dimensional figures sitting in at the counter and hecklers at their side.
The sit-in movement, or student sit-in movement, was a wave of sit-ins that followed the Greensboro sit-ins on February 1, 1960 in North Carolina. The sit-in movement employed the tactic of nonviolent direct action and was a pivotal event during the Civil Rights Movement. African-American college students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the United States powered the sit-in movement across the country. Many students across the country followed by example, as sit-ins provided a powerful tool for students to use to attract attention. There were massive amounts of support from the community for the students efforts, but more importantly, white involvement and support grew in favor of desegregation of department store restaurants. The workshop photo, Sit-in Observers, shows this counter from a different angle.

Oturma hareketi ya da ğrenci oturma hareketi, 1 Şubat 1960'ta Kuzey Carolina'daki Greensboro oturma eylemlerini takip eden bir oturma dalgasıydı. Oturma hareketi şiddet i軻rmeyen doğrudan eylemin taktiklerini kullandı ve Sivil Haklar Hareketi sırasında 輟k nemli bir olaydı. Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'ndeki Tarihsel Siyahi Kolejlere ve ワniversitelere giden Afrikan-Amerikan kolej ğrencileri, lke genelinde oturma hareketini destekledi. ワlkedeki bir輟k ğrenci de, dikkat 軻kmek i輅n g輙 bir ara sağladığı i輅n bunu takip etti. ヨğrencilerin 軋baları i輅n topluluktan byk miktarda destek alındı, ama daha da nemlisi, beyazların katılımı ve desteği mağazaların restoranlarında ayrıma son verilmesi hareketinin lehine byd. Hello Murat,
Another very interesting tableau from this well conceived museum. Well photographed from this angle with good colours and sharpness. Again, the commentary is very useful for explaining the context.

Hello Murat,
Another important reminder of the bad old days not so long ago, and not always so good even today. The photo is taken from a good angle and you handled the light well.

Hello Murat,
It's interesting that this museum really shows what happened and not just tells about it. A good photo of this exhibition about the sit-ins.

Merhaba Murat!
Another good entry in this series of equal rights for African Americans with the lifelike statues of the protesters instantly grabbing attention. Peaceful people power does work sometimes. Tfs!

Hi Murat,
interesting museums and exhibitions. One can learn so much about the history there and from your uploads.
I think I take way too few photos of interiors, your photos encourage me to try more of it.

murat
another interesting piece of the museum with the statues of the original personages around.this made me to think about accusation of racism in brazil, some said we are more racist than americans but this kind of segregation never occurred here, at least not at this level.
take care
jorge
