Photographer's Note

In early September the White Mountain Apaches and the San Carlos Apaches reopened their reservations to non-tribal members. Early in the morning of the 11th I purchased a hiking permit and followed US 60 to the bottom of the Salt River Canyon. There, two bridges cross the river. The old one, in front, has been decommissioned and is only used by those stopping at the rest area on the south (left) side to view the river and, behind me, the distant Apache Falls. Beyond the bridges is the location where rafters put in for their multi-day trip through rapids to the pull out just above Roosevelt Lake. That spot is also the entrance for the Ciebeque Falls hike on the White Mountain Apache Reservation (a special use permit is required for access).
