Thats another rather 'curvaceous' one from you Mathew!!! I like your sense of composition here and the b/w hues. Its bold and neat and nicely captured. Good work you do.

Hi Matthew, this caught my eye while I was browsing the b/w gallery. I like it very much, it's very graphic, with a mix of straight lines and curves that make it dynamic also. Your verticality choice enhances that as do the reflections on the carpet. The people are a welcome bonus and the treatment of the b/w is lovely, some cyan ? (trying to learn...). Well done!

Hi Matthew,
Very good use of lines and curves to dominate the structure of this compo. More challenging too is you choose B&W medium which is an unforgiving medium. But you've done this composition well ... good tones, contrast, and most of all perfectly composed. Excellent work! All the best for 2008.

Hello Matt,

I love this shot in black and white. Sometimes colors can detract, when it is shapes and patterns that you are interested in accentuating. The note is highly informative.

Regarding your note for my photograph, "Hot Air over Luxor," I wrote you a lengthy note. I am reproducing it below:

"I enjoyed very much reading your note, and I am delighted and honored to find that you, a Trekearth friend, are a descendent of the great inventor, James Watt. There is no doubt that his improvement of the steam engine largely powered the Industrial Revolution and brought us to this point. As a professor of physics, I've frequently spoken about the thermodynamics of the steam engine, and I've always given the human drama behind great discoveries. The second oldest university in America is William and Mary (founded in 1693) had a Scottish professor of physics and chemistry in a man named James Black. He is known to have been the favorite professor of the legendary Thomas Jefferson (3rd President of the US, the author of the Declaration of Independence). Black, it seems, ran for the Presidency of William and Mary, and when he lost, in disappointment, he returned to Scotland. When James Watt ran out of money and could not scale his model steam engine up to full size, James Black, with his own sizable personal fortune, came through, and sponsored Watt's remarkable machine.

"The Industrial Revolution had its seeds, however, a full-century earlier, when Isaac Newton (the greatest scientist in history), published his Principia (1687). In formulating a consistent mathematical physics, his revolution led to the coupling of science and technology, and that is what really laid the foundation for the symbioses of science and technology, fields that had been largely independent in the past. If Newton had not published, our quality of life would still be at the level of that in the 18th century. It is really the coupling of science and technology that has made the sort of progress from Kitty-Hawk in 1903 to landing on the moon in 1969 a reality.

"In the past few days I submitted the final chapter of my second book on Leonardo to the publisher. The first was "Math and the Mona Lisa," published in 2004 by the Smithsonian, and now in 11 languages. The new one, "Leonardo's Universe" will be released in May 2008 by the National Geographic. In merging great Renaissance Art with world class National Geographic photographs, and the prescient mental inventions of Leonardo, this book will really be in the spirit of Leonardo. He was the ultimate futurist. Sometimes I hear questions about whether he is overrated. The more that I've discovered, I've come to conclude, he is underrated. If he had published his scientific discoveries, we could have been at this level of scientific sophistication in the late 18th century.

another good shot i just have to talk about. i like the curvy/straight line contrast in this shot. the blue tone is also unique, which i think is what grabbed my attention. i actually prefer this shot to your newer shot, which has similar contrasts. well done!

Hi Matthew,
The curved lines met by the vertical lines here make for a great graphic and dynamic shot. The black and white enhances the light and pattern nicely, and the group of people all clumped together looking at something which has grabbed their attention all with different stances is a great feature in the shot. Nice work!
