Photographer's Note
The Sydney Harbour Bridge Viewed from South East Pylon
I suppose this world famous structure needs no real introduction. It is instantly recognizable, even from a lesser seen angle like this. A few quick facts about this giant steel structure:
503 metres long single-span
1,149 metres total length
49 metres width
139 metres tall
Opened March 1932 during Great Depression(76 years old)
6 million rivets used during construction
There are no curved steel components
16 deaths during construction, 2 from falls
Pylons (my vantage) are made of granite and stand 89m tall
Pylons are built separate to the bridge and never touch the main structure (used only for aesthetic balance)
800 homes demolished prior to construction
8 lanes of traffic, 2 rail and pedestrian walkways
$3.00 toll traveling south bound
One of only 3 large bridges in the world which offers guided tours to the top, the other two being the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and Brisbane痴 Story Bridge.
Is the centerpiece of the world痴 greatest fireworks celebration, every NYE.
Cost 」10 million to build (twice initial estimates) a cost which was not paid until 1988
Continually being painted an endless task
160, 000 cars cross every day
This view looks north from the SE Pylon towards North Sydney, Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House is to my left. The workshop is the view of the city directly behind me. To access this point walk up from The Rocks precinct and up the stairs into the pylon to the observation deck; you have to pay a fee of a few dollars and can stay as long as you like.
Matt
P.S. The flags on top are at half mast, but I can not recall why. You don't see that very often.

I have been to this point of view a few years ago, and I was impressed by the beauty of the Sidney Harbour view from there. Also, the view over the bridge is impressive too. And your photo shows it exactly. The B&W is excellent and puts us back in time when the bridge was opened. Have you done the climb of the SHB or even the Story Bridge? I have made some inquires in Brisbane and apparently they do not allow cameras for safety reasons. Well done.

Hi Matt
I don't have much to say really. Excellent DOF. Near perfect sharpness. Very interesting POV. Well, you had to pay few dollars to get this view, but it didn't matter. From what I see, it's worth the effort.
Well done.

Hi Matt,
A lesser known view but still unmistakably SHB. BW works well with this powerful composition, good contrast, DOF & well framed. I think Paul Hogan worked as a painter here, he had a life time job but probably preferred money, fame and fortune.

Hi Matt, very excellent shot of the bridge from this great vantage point. I haven't been up there myself yet. Looking at this tells me I absolutely have to get up there (not to climb, but to get a shot like this). Your composition picking up the group ascending and the other group descending at the same time, with a good shot of the road and walkway is excellent. It looks like it might have been a bit of an overcast day, but with the black and white things worked out great. Very nice.
Thanks, John

Hi Matt,
Well defined lines and your choice of black and white
certainly emphasized that. Amazing structure, I didn't know about that...I like the stairs, great idea. Cool place to visit for sure. Great contrast and composition.

Hello Matthew,
Very good idea the translation in B&W. It forces the look to focus and the shapes and there are many on this photo with this iron bridge.
Moreover, it changes from all the posts we could have seen before. It provides an other interpretation and it is the strengh of your photo.
The composition is nice with the structure going in the diagonal of the frame.
Yves.

Hi Matt
I personally like the idea to present this photo in B/W very much. I think it is perfect option to show that very interesting HISTORICAL Bridge. Very unusual POW gives an advantage to see the structure close enough. I am an engineer and I always appreciate any chance not only to see the beauty of places and buildings, but also have a close look on engineering stuff like that. Very well done! Thanks.

Hi Matthew
Wow! I haven't been to Sydney, since 1984 (a brief stopover at Mascot in 1997 doesn't count). It's time I rediscovered my own country! A superb b&w image with a good downward pov & excellent graphism. Tfs!

Hi Matt
Who needs to do the bridge climb when you can get a view like this for cheaper and be able to take your own photos. Your pov is very dynamic and I like how you have included vehicules, people and a boat. The b&w was a good choice given the weather.
Did you take the photo on April 29th 2005 ? I just checked on the internet and apparantley all Australian flags were flown at half mast that day as there was a state funeral in Canberra for Al Grassby who I think had been a politicien.

Hello Matthew,
Impressive viewon this vertiginous bridge.
The B&W treatment suits perfectly and the boat and some cars offer you excellent contrasts.
It is probably quite impressive to walk along this bridge. TFS.

Hi Matt,
I really like (photos of) bridges a lot and this picture gives a great view of one of the world's most famous. Great POV, an original one too. Very nice and interesting to see and discover the construction of the bridge. The people on the stairs are a great detail and they add scale too. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Mat
Spectacular, but I say that this takes me vertigo, I am not very loving high altitudes. The texture in black and white gives it a dramatic aspect to the scene, and the angle of shot is impressive.
Such scenarios are appropriate for a person with suicidal intentions :)

Hi Matt, I like your original POV and the B&W is suitable as gives a very accurate colour of the corrosion- resistant paint you mention. Excellent notes telling us the facts. Your interest in city planning and structures is shining brightly. TFS. Murray.

Hello Matthew,
an impressive bridge and a thought out composition in b/w with an "oldies" look, somewhat nostalgic and intemporal that I enjoy very much. The angle makes me think of a huge rollecoaster...Very sharp and neat, I like the white cars against the darker bridge, and the overall mood. Most interesting note, very good work.

hi Matt
We have all seen so much of this bridge in normal view, that I welcome your special pov for this B&W. Only a photographer of keen interest would go up such height in the pylon to snap this shot, and for that, you are commended.
Superbly presented in this angle, with the sharp details of the steel framing componnets. Your slight skew enables the side of the arches to be seen, without too much congestion.
Showing a bit of water below, at right, gives a good sense of depth, plus the small boat passing through - great timing moment!
I can be certain the view up there in person is such an experience.

Hi Matthew,
I really appreciate to see this shot, because it's the first time I see this bridge from a higher point of view than the walkways. It's rather rare that someone can present such an outstanding vantage point from any given bridge, unless on board of an helicopter. It might be quite vertiginous to stand on the edge of this structure but the view seems fabulous.
I'm a huge fan of bridges and they are usually part of any visit in a new city. So I'm totally fascinated by this one, even more that your version present it in the most interesting way. The strong perspective creating a diagonal composition, the close look that makes it feel bold and solid, the well performed black and white conversion, perfectly adapted to architectural photography.
A very high quality shot.
Congratulations!

Hi Mat! Yes, my Pompeii street is too blue, now I can see it! thanks for suggestion Ill try to change it :)
about the popularity of those ruins.. they are really famous, its like u get back in the time, see those streets, ancient buildings - ancient life, their daily routines.. Ive seen an ancient restaurant - it was really amazing. For me Pompeii is even more intresting than famous colosseum or pantheon :-)
I wrote too much ;-)

Hi Matthew, What a wonderfully graphical photo, the crisscross beams form a brilliant relationship through the shot, a superb POV &, B/W just excellent giving so much detail, great to see the cars & trucks flying past from this position, however the timing too catch the speed boat as it shoots bye was impeccable, first class picture, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Matthew
I have a slide that I took from this very spot with the same POV. I also got the parachuters coming in after it was announced that same day that Sydney got the Olympics for 2000. Nicely done. I like the B&W presentation.

Hello Matthew,
This is very impressive view of SHB in vertical format. The conversion to black and white is so powerful that it inspires me to make my first black and white post in Trek Lens. Amazing sharpness and details and I can almost feel the raw steel in constructing the bridge. The structure is further enhanced by the wide angle perspective overlooking the distant view of the city across the river. Well done and best regards,

Hi Mathew,
Having recently travelled to Sydney this month, I appreciate this photo even more. I now realise how difficult it is to capture it in a way that hasn't been done a million times.....literally. Anyway, you've achieved that here. The POV from the pylon provides us with a far more interesting view, and I must say I'm amazed at the clarity and detail you've achieved. The fact that we can see cars, pedestrians and bridge climbers adds real life to the structure. I also think the B&W format works exceptionally well.....kind of gives it an old age feel. Very well done Mathew.
Cheers Grant

Hi Matthew,
Your point of view and composition are perfect here. The tiny people on the bridge really give a sense of the huge size. There are also other great details like the speed boat, and the cars in between almost every gap of the bridge, especially on the side. Black and white suits this structure well. One can definately not be afraid of heights to go up there. Great work!
