Kaikoura Bay, a photo from Canterbury, South Island

Photographer's Note

Kaikoura is a base for wildlife experiences of all kinds. An easy two-hour drive north of Christchurch, Kaikoura makes for a great day trip or a fun stop on your way to Marlborough.

Kaikoura's environment is truly spectacular � the village is caught between the rugged Seaward Kaikoura Range and the Pacific Ocean. In winter the mountains are covered with snow, adding to the drama of the landscape.

Kaikoura痴 special talent is marine mammal encounters � whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters. Whale watching trips leave the town several times a day and the local seal colony is always entertaining. There are plenty of caf駸, restaurants and shops to explore.

I have seen many colonies of fur seals on the rocks while going by bud. But I haven't spotted any dolphins or whales. Strange but whale watching was not from the boats but from helicopters!

Hi Malgo,

I like the wide angled, panoramic crop and the people add scale and animate the scene without being obtrusive. Nice sunset colors at top right. Tfs!

I like the use of the panoramic format and the dispersal of the people across the frame. Also, the harmonious tonal palette and the excellent detail to be observed in the shingle.

Hello Malgo,
Today I think all three photos could have been main uploads. And it's not just because they all contain people. The sceneries, colours, light, views of the sea are all fantastic, but somehow this beauty would be lost without people admiring it. And it's not enough that we can admire it sitting at our computers. We need those persons as our "agents". At least according to my ideas of photography. But without the beta versions these photos would have lost most of their impact. The ordinary version of TE makes them far too small.

This is not a picture that we see everyday.
But a very difficult to make a stroll on the beach with all the stones.
Lovely silhouettes of the mountains in background.
Splendid panorama view.
Composition and presentation are pleasant to look at.

Three lovely panoramic shots of this most attractive location!
The sky slowly becomes more eye-catching as the sun sets over the sea.
At this time of day, the pebbled beach looks far more attractive than in full sunshine. (I must remember that!)
I love places that can be visited, that offer chances to see wild creatures as well as good photography!

What beautiful scenery. I like the dark clouds, the texture of the mountains, and the curve of the rocky shore. It's nice that there are only a few people in this scene; the wonderful natural view is not blocked by too many tourists. :-)

Hello Malgo,
At the moment there is a series of commercials on the Dutch radio to promote a visit to New Zealand in our summer, when it is winter there. The winter is mild and if I can believe the message just about as the Icelandic summer that was this year very bad.
There are no trains in Iceland, but there seems to be a good network with buses. However, everything is very expensive.
A beautiful photo on which the two couples make the composition extra attractive.

Beautiful beach scene captured with soft and pleasant colors! I like this diagonal line formed by the sea and the presence of the people well positioned in the image! It must be a different experience watching the whales from the helicopter! Very nice job!

bardzo romantyczny czas i miejsce.
Gory w takiej bliskosci morza zawsze robia ogromne wrazenie. Pomimo bardzo trudnych warunkow, swiatla nie bylo juz za wiele, ale efekt koncowy jest znakomity.
Chmurki bardzo przyjemnie dekoruja niebo.
Widze ze na przemian Polska i NZ. Jakos wyhamowalas teraz z podrozami?
Skorzysta na ttym reportaz z NZ :)
