Photographer's Note
Hi all.
This is another photo taken during my trip to Taupo.
This is the village of Little Waihi and the steaming cliffs of Hipaua. Waihi has a Population of approx 70 and was evacuated recently after prolonged rain and geothermal activity threatened to cause a landslide on the steaming cliffs above the village.
The steaming cliffs can be seen above the main cloud of mist.
Lake Taupo itself is a crater formed by a massive volcanic explosion, there was a mountain here before there was a lake. The lake is approx 40 Km long and 24 Km wide so the explosion must have been huge.
In WS a bonus shot taken a day earlier with different light.
Enjoy, Paul.

Hello Paul,
I thought I was looking at forest fires. Nice point of view, from a safe distance. I can just imagine the amount of pressure building under these hills. Interesting image. Thanks Paul :-)

Hi Paul,
curious and wonderful how this steamy fog rises against the hill from out of the sea while the sun is colouring the hills and the village already.

very interesting register. I personally like how the low clouds and the steams fill the frame and the golden light on the hill. The panorama format also pleases very much. Well done!

Hi Paul,
Interesting place and thanks for the note of its history, it has so much more meaning to the photo. I can see clearly the steam on the cliff behind the mist of cloud. I normally would have though there was a fire in the forrest. Very active place with thread of eruption, yet at the moment, it seems beautiful with the mountain bathes in the warm sunlight. Thanks.

This is on our itinerary. (We're doing self-drive, but the itinerary is pre-booked, as it will be your summertime)This together with the WS is a good demonstration of the difference light makes to an image. Actually I like both images, but yes the golden light of early/late in the day can't be beaten. The houses look tiny, giving us an idea of the scale.

Hi Paul,
A peculiar and interesting combination between the mist near the water and the steam columns that go out from inside the mountain. The volcanic activity here is notable, and it must be a bit worrying to walk along this place.
The composition with the mountain, the sea and the sky is harmonic and is balanced well.
Good work.

Hello Paul, Before reading your note I thought the mist & mist was all the same thing, interesting the evolution of our world. I like the expanse of the blue lake waters in the WS version that is missing here, different but both nice, interesting shots. The row of buildings puts the picture in to perspective.

Hi Paul. What attracted me to this image amongst the thumbnails was the sense of mystery and the odd colouring combination of col blue and the warm rusty colours. I see why the coppery tones now where the late sun has also given the steam a special hue. Interesting spot where to build one's home.Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Paul
Nice light here. The mist and steam really add visual interest. The buildings are a tad soft. I wonder if the aperture would have been better set to F11 or 16 but perhaps you didn't have a tripod at the time as I see the shutter speed was only 100 at F6.3.
