Coffee-growing family, Tanna, a photo from Tafea, South

Photographer's Note

The island of Tanna in Vanuatu is ideal for the grwoing of coffee. The active Mt Yasur volcano provides natural fertilisation from frequent sprinklings of volcanic ash, the climate, although tropical, is pleasant, influeneced by the Pacific ocean. Coffee growing families like this one in Middle Bush, can grow the coffee beans along with their other cash crops and are paid cash on what they produce. Here the beans are sun-dried before being taken to the factory on the coast near Lenakel, main town on the island of Tanna. Coffee produced, although in small quantites, is good & has an increasing following in Australia, New Zealand, parts of the US and also in Japan.

Hello Neil,

Great family portrait, which seems to capture in just one picture most of their life (themselves, their work, and their house).

The intense green of the surroundings adds even more intensity to the composition.

I like this family photo from a rarely seen country. They are all lined up nicely, the colours are good and we also see some of their environment. The strong light has been admirably handled. Along with the informative note this is a most welcome contribution to TE.
