Photographer's Note

When Pope John Paul II visited Bras匀ia in 1991 the government asked for Niemeyer to create a monumental, but provisional, altar to a special gigantic mass in the Big Axis. When the Pope was gone the people became so impressed with the metallic structure they thought in a way to preserve it, the fa軋de was removed to another spot, near the General Headquarters, and the rest of the building was built in the back part to complete the structure. This church was named Cathedral of Saint Mary of Military, Queen of Peace. It has the shapes of a military barrack and it is used by the army.

Quando o Papa Jo縊 Paulo II visitou Bras匀ia em 1991, as autoridades pediram a Niemeyer para que ele criasse um altar monumental e provisio que foi erguido no Eix縊 para a grande missa. Quando o papa foi embora preservaram a estrutura met疝ica e a remontaram em outra parte da cidade, desta feita completaram o fundo da constru鈬o em concreto e criaram essa igreja de Santa Maria dos Militares, Rainha da Paz, que tem as formas de uma barraca e que � usada pelos militares e fica perto do Quartel General.

Hi Jorge,
Interesting that the late Pope had such an influence on the religious architecture. I have showed in the past a church from my hometown a church where the alter for the Pope visit once stood. Not the former empty fields are surrounded with residential housing.

Hello Jorge,
The very dark sky is a great background for the illuminated white walls and cross of the church. Excellent sharpness and clarity. Also that small triangle of green is a nice detail.
