Photographer's Note

One of the most degradated spots in the city of Bel駑, Par�. Why the heck would i visit a place like this, you might ask. My mother was born and lived part of her life few meters from this place, in the district of Cidade Velha ("Old City" already shown here). Besides, i have kept two big sensations from my first visit to the city, when i was 5: the smell of the city and the wood of a pier, which happens to be further ahead this group of houses, for my surprise.

When I arrived there with my aunt, a man approached us and asked what we were doing there. I responded I was there for personal reasons, a kind of a meeting with my childhood. He smiled and said I should be quick, because it was dangerous to stay there for long.

I did not stay long, and in the meantime I stole 3 images. Prostitutes resting, men smoking, kids playing in a delightful bliss. A place to be revisited.

Oi Isabelle,
ﾉ verdade, lado a lado na galeria do TE!
Esta foto est� um show, com a silhueta vindo em nossa dire鈬o, d� at� medo.
O cachorro passa um sossego... e olha que eu normalmente tenho medo de cachorro. Muito pior que ter medo de bicho � ter medo de gente - isso n縊 � normal!
Uma pena ser perigoso, como o cara disse.
A diferen軋 de ilumina鈬o de um lado e do outro ficou muito significativa, parece uma luz no fundo de um t佖el - voc� � mestra em composi鋏es alegicas. Quando a luz no fim do t佖el � de pobreza e perigo, o resultado � um impacto muito forte, como acontece com esta imagem.

A feeling of uneasiness and insecurity, and one has to eave the place at the ealiest.....the notes make the shot more valueable, Isabel.When one door closes, another window opens.....see this is what your shot also shows.
if you look on the empty space on the top, you see light coming out om the winows.
This is light of hope.

Interesting way to frame this view. The background seem properly emphasized while the human silhouette add a nice focal element. Good details and light. The tunnel vision seen here is very effective. Thanks Isabel.

O homem n縊 te enganou, Isabel. Entrar no Porto do Sal, mesmo � luz do dia, ainda mais carregando uma c穃era, � bastante arriscado, mas ainda bem que tu resolveste correr esse risco. Ficou muito bem a 疵ea sombria em primeiro plano, com essa figura um tanto sinistra no meio do caminho que d� para a 疵ea mais iluminada.
O local passou por um grande processo de faveliza鈬o nas 伃timas d馗adas, dando origem a 疵ea de invas縊 das Malvinas, assim chamada por que a ocupa鈬o desordenada na 疵ea "explodiu" na mesma 駱oca da guerra.

Me veio � cabe軋 um trecho da m俍ica "Olho de Boto", do compositor paraense Nilson Chaves:

Das velhas palhas tran軋das

Uma imagem com uma carga bem forte quando se l� tua nota.Eu n縊 conhe輟 Bel駑, mas aqui existem locais assim.Voc� foi mesmo muito corajosa ea foto ficou muito boa, mostrando a silhueta do homem e como diz a Docarmo, a luz no fim do t佖el.

Hi Isabel - that's a very effective daily life, for I believe that the raison d'etre of TE is precisely places and scenes like this one, and not just "the sights"... the silhouette is well placed, it lets us see the houses and scene on the sides, and the dog certainly provides a mood of abandonment. I wonder about a crop of the top third, probably reinforcing this window-like, or tunnel-like framing that you achieved here... Thank you very much, also for the great note! Regards, Daniel

A "faveliza鈬o" � vista em todas as grandes capitais brasileiras ... Com isso, vem tamb駑 a degrada鈬o dos valores humanos, a viol麩cia, a prostitui鈬o e outras coisas mais, ainda piores ... Uma l疽tima.
Quanto a fotografia, achei-a excelente. Tem tudo a ver com o texto descrito!

Composicao bem interessante, com essa moldura e essas sombras! O lado de fora, cheio de cores e detalhes, faz um bom contraste com as sombras no primeiro plano. Belo trabalho!

To meio sumido do TE, mas quando voltar pro Brasil vou colocando mais fotos. J� estamos no final da viagem...

Boa tarde Isabel!
Vcs fizeram um pacto para mostrar as mazelas brasileiras (Nivaldo, Paulo)?
J� vi muitas "fotos den佖cia" aqui e gosto delas (apesar de n縊 ser muito f� de registr�-las - vivi num para﨎o chamado Vila dos Operadores na inf穗cia e nunca gostei do "Brasil Real" que comecei a ver em minhas viagens de f駻ias a Santos e regi縊). Gosto de den佖cia, gosto de cr咜icas construtivas... mas, quando posso fujo pr� lugares onde este tipo de coisa � mais reduzido (nulo, isso n縊 existe... vivemos na Terra!).
Enfim... sua foto em termos t馗nicos, na minha humilde opini縊 est� muito boa, acho que procuraria fazer algo semelhante se estivesse procurando o melhor 穗gulo para o lugar. Vc o fez de uma maneira muito boa!
Uma bela imagem, uma linda foto, de uma realidade triste!
Acho que na sua inf穗cia, o lugar n縊 era t縊 degradado assim, n�? O Brasil cresceu, mas infelizmente, muito do que era bom, tamb駑 se perdeu!

Hi Isabel.
A very engaging silhouette shot! It has a good sense of depth and I like the little bit of light bringing out the detail in the dog. Your shot also conveys some of both the colour and the poverty of the neighbourhood which you described so well in your note. I find the personal history element to be very interesting and illuminating.
It is interesting to reflect on the olfactory memory - the sense of smell. To me, smells have the strongest memories of all. Occasionally I come up against a smell I have not experienced since childhood (such as the smell of black pudding being cooked), and I recognise it immediately after more than 50 years. But I am getting off the track.

Oi Bel, together with your fine note you can really feel the threathening atmosphere here. The silhouetted men for a part closing the perspective is vital to this. Great and very evocative street work my dear friend.
And what a special experience it must have been consideringthe personal history involved!

Dear Isabel,
According to your note this place is well worth visiting,
even though it might be dangerous (unfortunately, many
places nowadays are changing from good to bad instead of
being opposite).
I like the way you captured this man coming towards you...
... now this can be seen as a dangerous situation, even
though when I first looked at it it seemed to be quite
normal and without any 'negative' thoughts.
Also, the very foreground is inteersting because of your
inclusion of that upper portion - an interesting roofing
construction (is this sort of a passage in the street
or were you actually indoors while shooting this street?).

pois �, o local est� mesmo indicando perigo. Contudo a foto est� muito boa com a silueta do rapaz entrando da 疵ea de sombras, o c縊 deitado, os detalhes do alto e a luz do dia ao fundo. belo flagrante. ﾉ, memias de inf穗cia n縊 tem pre輟, quem sabe algum dia algu駑 revitalize este espa輟 e vc possa curtir o local com mais tempo e seguran軋..

al駑 de perigoso, enigm疸ico! Esse rapaz em sua dire鈬o chega a dar medo, mesmo. Apesar da silhueta n縊 revelar sua face, tudo indicava que voc� n縊 teria boas-vindas...n縊 sei se foi esse que se aproximou de voc� para os conselhos. Legal podermos revisitar lugares por onde passamos, vivemos, especialmente quando nos fazem lembrar de nossa inf穗cia. Tive alguns momentos desses quando fui a S縊 Paulo um tempo atr疽. Bel﨎sima imagem, apesar de aterrorizante :) Quero ver o que vem por a� com essa 72-300mm!

I like this silhouette of man and dog using the entrance opening to the light of the alley to show activity of the day.
