Photographer's Note

Last year I passed through this region in the interior of the state of Paran where there were strong traces of Ukrainian immigration. I did not imagine that, sadly, the situation could one day repeat itself, because the great difficulties of the European past, such as famines and wars, seemed to be things only in the history books.

Unfortunately due to the authoritarianism of a president, this happened again, and it damaged the life of a people and a great nation.

The first wave of Ukrainian immigration took place in Brazil between the 1890s and 1920s. Today, it is estimated that about 2 million Ukrainian descendants live in Brazil, about 1% of the current Brazilian population, a relevant number, despite not being the most representative, such as the Italians who are almost 25% of the current Brazilian population.

I was watching a report this week that more than 1000 Ukrainians arrived in Brazil since the beginning of the war. Some came by their own means and others by means of support institutions, usually coordinated by religious institutions. I was seeing that, at first, houses will be rented, and then with the support of donations, new houses will be built to house immigrants in cities in the interior where the Ukrainian culture is very strong, such as Prudentpolis, which still has 75% of its population. formed by descendants of Ukrainians and even schools in the city still have Ukrainian classes among their subjects.
