Photographer's Note

Very few people abroad knows about the fight of Brazilian soldiers during II War. Brazilian government was neutral and had a good relationship with Nazis and only entered in the war when our merchant ships were destroyed by them.
After that Brazil gave permission to USA to use our territory and reach Africa and southern Italy.
After that, in 1944, Brazil sent around 25,000 soldiers to Italy, they had no nice equipments, no nice guns, no winter clothes and Americans gave them these things. They were used to break the Gothic Line, a point where the Nazis had made a special protection against the movement of enemies to north in the region between Parma and Florence. Few time after they surprised the Americans because their ability and the German soldiers preferred to surrender to us because we didn't humiliate them as the American did, a whole German division was surrendered this way, something very rare in the war.
459 Brazilian soldiers and pilots died, they were buried in Pistoia -Italy and their remains were brought to Rio in 1960, because Brazilians understood they had to come back home anyway.
Here in this photo you can see the humble monument with the map of the campaign and the coat of arms of the Brazilian troops with the snake smoking. ---WHY? ---When Brazil was neutral it was told our country would enter in the II WW only if a snake became to smoke.
Looks like a small participation, no fame, not famous movies about, but presence of Brazil in the war was decisive to the victory. I had a neighbor who fought there and the French priest who gave me the first Eucharist fought there too.

...............
