Dysert O'Dea is sometimes described as a castle but it is really a fortified tower house. It dates from around 1470 and has changed hands quite a few times. Some of the owners made the mistake of supporting the wrong chiefs.
Today it has been restored to be the very interesting Clare Archaeology Centre.
Nearby are some other good ruins, the Dysert O'Dea Monastery, to explore and in the workshop are a ruined house and a substantial cross.

Hi Ian,very nice report, showing the old cross and what remains of monastery in the 2 WS, but obviously the main pic is the best and most interesting,a castle that in fact is a fortified big tower,it's nice to know that now is an archeology center and it's well restored too. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Hello Ian,
A very impressive tower/fortress/castle and a bright and clear photo. Colours and sharpness meet your usual high standards. I spent 5-10 minutes cloning out the wires, just to see if I could do it neatly. It was quite easy, but I won't bother to post a WS.
Best regards,
Gert
PS I love the cross in the WS.

Hi Ian,
The trees are framing well the tower. The point of view is showing a double perspective of the architecture of the Dysert O'Dea. The light is giving good colors output. Have a nice day.

Hello Ian,
Excellent, sharp capture of the fortified tower. The narrow slit windows confirm that it was a defensive building. Only the very top floor would have access to better light!
It's an amazingly well conserved relic of the past.
I like the well-captured details on the stone cross, too! The saint looks to be enduring a crucifixion, with a sad bishop beneath!
I wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas, Bev :-)

Hello Ian, a well preserved tower.
I assume that you went inside?
The narrow slits of windows, just wide enough for an arrow to be shot, before we see slightly larger windows on higher floors.
A good point of view showing two faces of the building.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Ian,
Dysert O'Dea is sometimes described as a castle but it seems as a very strong tower
A nice summer picture with the Irish flag above.
Also the building with lovely light makes your picture attractive
Nice composition, pleasant to look at.
Very well done, TFS.

Hello Ian,
Not your fault, but city planners could have used underground wires instead, in this section of the county. If it were for a professional catalogue, I would probably clone them out, but it's only Trekearth, so no big deal. Tfs!

Hi Ian,
indeed tower castles like this are popular in Ireland. Even quite a famous Blarney Castle is just a tower castle.
It is occasionally a bit disappointing but you can get used to that.
Nice capture here, and you also have the national flag to decorate it.
Very well done,
M

Hello Ian
This magnificent tower house rises defiantly with its strong structure and great height, great state of preservation.
The great cross of the WS is fantastic and some designs recall Celtic drawings.
Very best regards.
Luis.
